Welcome to Skybacher’s Locker. It seems like everyone is blogging these days. I’ve actually been doing it since April of 2004, way before it was popular. Check the archives!! I’ve gotten away from it a bit, but today I was looking through pictures and realized how quickly time goes by. So I’ve wanted for a while to put my thoughts, art, dreams, opinions, sense of humor and reflections about family out there for whoever is interested. So here it is!! Skybacher’s Locker all artwork is mine so don’t use it without my permission. All dreams were given to me by God. And all glory goes to Him!!
I haven’t been on here in a while but I went trick-or-treating with the kids tonight around the ol’ Miller Rd. neighborhood. The scariest thing I saw all night was how quickly time flies by, and how cheap people become over the years. (What happened to the big candy bars we used to get??) It’s so much fun though seeing the kids get so excited about some candy that their Dad ends up eating anyway. Ha. Everything is going well. I’ve had a lot more time to be creative since my soccer team didn’t make the playoffs, and I have to say I really, really enjoyed it. Basketball will be starting up soon, and the ministry has it’s flag football tournament this weekend.
Well the soccer season is nearly over, but we still have 2 really huge games. The crazy thing is at this point we could still tie for the section championship. That would be awesome! But, our first priority is making it into the playoffs. Yesterday we pulled out a tough 5-1 victory in the rain at Riverside. Now that sets up a match-up with Neshannock at 11 am on Saturday. Basically the winner will move onto the playoffs. I feel really stressed because it looks like our starting goal keeper won’t be there. Oh well I guess the show must go on. Everything else is going fine, but I must admit soccer has taken up a lot of my time and energy.
After watching the olympics and beach volleyball it prompted me to take out some old volleyball cartoons from my stash. I revamped these on illustrator. My siblings and I used to actually play volleyball in the living room with a nerf ball and some clothesline. We would pick one of the cartoons and keep stats of kills, blocks, aces, etc. I have at least 50 other players that I’ve created over the years. I think it all started after playing a video game called Kings of the Beach for the Commodore 64. Ever heard of either of those? Good times!!!!
Tomorrow I leave again for the “mission field”. At least that is what my pastor has called it. I didn’t think I would be back this soon, but a 5th grade teacher will be out for at least the first 2 days. I’ll have to put a bunch of 5th graders minds at ease while trying to deal with my own stresses of the first day of school as a substitute teacher.
Tyler will be heading to 1st grade. I’ve already cried twice. Jalen got his first haircut today. Summer just flew by. It’s all too much. Oh well life goes on!! Happy First Day of School!!
This has been one of the greatest years for sports that I can remember. The year started with an amazing upset of the undefeated (and hated by me) Patriots. An unbelievable basketball National Championship that Memphis should have won if only they could shoot foul shots. What Tiger Woods did in the U.S. Open was unbelievable. Then there was the final of Wimbeldon with Nadal and Federer. It was maybe the greatest tennis match ever played. The Pens and the Redwings battled it out to some great games. The final game was amazing even though it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it too. And now what Michael Phelps has done is ridiculous. Somehow I’ve watched all of this and I don’t even have cable, or watch a lot of t.v., but it has been a great year for a sports fan, even if the Pirates still stink.
We just finished up another Skybacher Sports Camp. I brought back an old character from my days directing Youth Guidance Summer Camp. Cranky D. He was a big hit with all of the rowdy boys it gave them somebody to yell at. The camp itself was a real challenge. I am by no means an expert on football, and we didn’t have any girls sign up for this session, so that meant a lot of pushing, shoving, and short attention spans. It was still a lot of fun and the counselors did a great job. Next up basketball camp.
I just finished up another week of Skybacher Sports Camps. It was soccer this time and I dressed up like another character to start each morning. This week I was a Jamaican soccer player name Mobacca. The kids just stood in awe the first 2 days and didn’t really catch all of my Jamaican jokes. By day 3 they couldn’t get enough of Mobacca. What’s awesome is that the kids were never quite sure if it was really me. Remember when you were a kid and you believed anything was possible. I wish I had faith like that now. I guess I keep seeing a lot of reflection as I work with all these kids. Big Up Mon!!
Last night I watched my kids riding their scooters down a hill, and chasing after a bunny. Not too exciting to most people I’m sure. But for me it took me back to time when I was riding not a scooter but my big wheel down a hill, without a care in the world. No stress, no sense of time, no bills to pay. I miss that ol’ black & gold “big wheel” with a hawk on the side. I miss having no stress, sense of time, or bills to pay. I thank God for kids and the reminders they bring!!
